Zubinski and I met back in Bennet’s yard. I lifted my thumb toward Petra’s house. “Neighbor didn’t know a lot about Bennet’s activities, but he said Bennet was gone for a month about eighteen months ago, and when he came back, he looked ill. It’s curious, anyway,” I said.

“It is.” She pointed at the house on the other side of Bennet’s. “Nobody home there so I’ll check back later. The others I talked to didn’t know much.”

“Same here. Seems to me it would be a good neighborhood to run an illegal operation from your house. Trusting people who didn’t see much, if anything, amiss,” I said.

“Yeah, so don’t go spreading that word to anyone else,” she said.

I chuckled as we headed back into Bennet’s garage then opened the inside door and announced we were back. The team had a stack of evidence bags on the living room floor. Smoke was putting the laptop into a large bag. “I took a look into Bennet’s files and came across a familiar name.”

I shrugged. “Whose?”

“Eloise W.”

A sense of dread burned through my middle. “I hate to ask. Do we know more than one Eloise W?” I asked.

“As in Doctor Watts’s wife, Eloise?” Zubinski said.

Smoke swiped his forehead with his sleeve. “Unfortunately. I pulled up two videos that Bennet, or someone else, made with her in them.”

“That sicko,” Weber said.

“As in, you don’t want to see them,” Carlson said.

“We viewed enough to see what they were, then turned ʼem off. Appeared to be more soft than hard porn if that’s any consolation. That SOB Bennet must have talked Missus Watts into an uneven exchange, modeling, etcetera for drugs,” Smoke said.

The fiery sensation in my stomach spread up my neck to my face. “Yuck. That type of thing—probably more with prostitution than porn movies—happens to teens and people who don’t have money for drugs. But Missus Watts had money,” I said.

“She might have been spending a lot, depending on her habit, and felt the need to hide some large expenses, keep her husband’s suspicions and questions at bay,” Smoke said.

“Our investigators never found a connection between her and anyone we know in the drug world. Not in her phone, not on her computer,” I said.

“No. This new info supports what we figured. She was cunning enough to cover her tracks with burner phones that were never found,” Smoke said.

“We’ll have to let Doctor Watts know about the videos,” I said.

Smoke sucked in a breath. “We will. Not an easy conversation, by any stretch of the imagination. If the videos are out there in the cyber world, it’s only a matter of time before someone who knows the doctor and his late wife will see them and recognize her, know who she is. Due to the content, they might not tell the doctor, rat out themselves.

“But there is always the chance the famous ‘anonymous’ caller would. Truth be told, we don’t know if the doctor is into that stuff himself and might happen across the videos. The best approach is to bring Watts into the office for a chat.
